San Diego Personal Trainer explaining 3 habits that block weight loss

Why You’re Not Losing Weight: 3 Habits to Fix Now

Are you stuck losing weight for a week or two—then gaining it right back? If you keep bouncing around the same number on the scale, you’re not alone, and it’s usually not because you “lack willpower.” In most cases, a few common daily habits are quietly slowing your progress.

As a San Diego Personal Trainer, I see these 3 issues all the time—let’s break them down and fix them so you can start seeing real, lasting results.

Bad Habit #1: You’re Eating “Healthy”… But Too Much

Healthy food is still food, and food still has calories. It’s absolutely possible to overeat chicken, rice, nuts, avocado, or “clean” snacks and stall your progress.

Sure, overeating whole foods is usually better than overeating junk—but extra calories are extra calories, and they can still prevent fat loss.

What to do:

  • Watch portion sizes (even with healthy meals)
  • Track your intake for a few days to spot hidden calories
  • Build meals around protein + fibre to stay full longer

Bad Habit #2: You’re Not Drinking Enough Water

Most people walk around slightly dehydrated without realising it. This can slow fat loss, mess with energy levels, and increase cravings.

It gets worse: thirst often feels like hunger—so you may snack when your body actually wants water.

What to do:

  • Sip water consistently throughout the day
  • Drink a glass before meals to reduce overeating
  • Notice if your “hunger” disappears after hydration

Bad Habit #3: You’re Coasting in the Gym

If you want visible change, “just showing up” isn’t always enough. Light effort and comfortable workouts can maintain your current body—but they rarely create a transformation.

Ask yourself: On a scale of 1–10, how hard are you training?
If your workouts are consistently below an 8, your intensity (or plan) likely needs an upgrade.

What to do:

  • Progress weights, reps, or difficulty each week
  • Limit distractions and train with intention
  • Follow a structured program instead of random workouts
